Sandy Blvd Clinic - History
Getting
To The Clinic
From an interview with Dr. Cranford –
“Even back when I first came here in 1975, I treated everything. I
was trained by two doctors at the time, Dr Beal and Dr Oliver. Dr.
Beal was definitely my mentor – he was an osteopathic physician
and a chiropractor. An osteopath is a lot like an M.D. in
their credentials, but he was an old-time osteopath, clear back.
Between these two doctors, Oliver did the basic treatments, and Beal
did the treatments plus surgeries (these are minor,
non-hospital surgeries). I connected with Dr. Beal and
was trained by him in the whole range of procedures. I knew
that I'd have to do it all and do it well, because you couldn't just
treat hemorrhoids,
you have to treat every related condition that people come in with. So
I took a real interest in the surgical aspect of it, which no one
else was really teaching at the time.
“The story really began in my senior year of chiropractic
college. There was a student in my class named Stephen Oliver,
and his uncle owned this clinic, so I assumed he was going to come
here, until I discovered he was taking another offer. Since
I had developed an interest in this work, I applied, they interviewed
me and hired me. The next two years were spent training, observing,
and taking patients under their supervision.
“The more I did the better. I wanted to learn as much
as they could throw at me, because I wanted to do everything I possibly
could for patients.
“I also spent time with a protologist in Seattle to learn
his surgical techniques, and I keep current on innovations within
the field.
“Then when Beal retired, I became a partner in 1977. I
practiced alongside Oliver for five years and he retired, and I had
another partner for about 10 years, he moved on, and it's just been
me since 1995.
“So many things have changed. Even back in the early days,
like the 1930’s, the Clinic had a big reputation, so people
would come here, they had no appointments and they would stand in
line. I'm serious, they would stand in line! Can you
imagine that today? Another example is that until 1993, we
couldn’t prescribe medications! Now I have a fairly
wide range of pharmaceuticals I use when necessary, including anti-inflammatories,
antibiotics and pain medications.
“Despite how things have changed, the core of the treatment
approach, like the Keesey
treatments, has changed surprisingly little over time.”
