Hemorrhage or bleeding from the rectum never occurs normally. It may be slight or severe, and deserves special concern. Bleeding may be experienced in many different rectal diseases including hemorrhoids, fissures, inflamed crypts or papillae. It may be a warning of colitis or cancer.

We can ordinarily determine the cause of rectal bleeding by a careful anorectal examination using lighted instruments such as a proctoscope or a sigmoidescope.

I cannot state this strongly enough - I hope that anyone who witnesses bright red blood - even a relatively small amount - coming from their anorectal area will consider contacting us. This is the time for active treatment, not for hoping the ailment will heal on its own.
