The Keesey Treatment
Our primary treatment for hemorrhoids is not a "secret method." It
doesn’t involve injections, surgery, or burning with heat or
electricity. It is an electronic treatment with an "accepted
practice" rating, however within the medical community, there
are very few doctors who recognize its immense
advantages over other treatment types. Interest in the Keesey
Treatment faded in the 1930’s because it requires time, patience
and skill, or "the consumption of much time in
its application" (Keesey
Treatment – History). It's no wonder it didn't become
popular – after all, how
many medical doctors have time in their busy
practices to wield a handheld treatment
tool patiently? But
the staff doctors of our clinic saw the great
benefits of this treatment method, and in
fact have added many important refinements
and expansions to its development over the
years. Since the early days of the 1930's at Sandy
Blvd Clinic we have given more than 10,000
Keesey treatments as part of our integrated
treatment methodology. Our patients are
very happy with their results.
During a treatment session, the electronic action of the tool’s
tip causes the hemorrhoid to shrink and shrivel
up. This is accomplished with little or no
pain by a chemical change which takes place within the hemorrhoid
itself. After a number
of treatments, the hemorrhoidal mass has
essentially pulled back into the rectal wall, leaving only a small
scar.
Despite the misery they might have endured for weeks, months or
years, everyone still appreciates getting finished quickly. The
actual treatment time is around 5 to 7 minutes, and the overall treatment session usually
takes less than 15 minutes. In a few cases during treatment there
is a moderate discomfort experienced, but the patient seldom rises
from the treatment table with anything unpleasant to remind him of
his treatment.
Suffice to say, there is a very low incidence of side effects. Nothing
else would be acceptable to me as a doctor.
After 10 to 14 days, it's very difficult to visually find the treatment
site. That site is then permanently resistant to becoming hemorrhoidal
again. Another area may enlarge in time under vascular (blood)
pressure, but the treatment site is now a strong link in the chain.
But in practice, it’s fairly rare that I see people returning
with hemorrhoids in other areas of the rectum. Long-term followup
has shown very gratifying results.
There are other clinics around the US perform the Keesey treatment,
but to my knowledge, none have specialized in it to the degree that
we have over the last 70 years. Many subtle considerations
that come into play, guiding exactly how I perform each treatment. Each
will differ from the last patient and even the last treatment on
the same patient. It’s something of an art but its success
is based entirely on science.
Two special notes : First, thousands of people
today are bravely trying to live with their
hemorrhoids because
a doctor has told them they are unfit for
standard surgery due to chronic debilitating
disease, such as cardiac (heart) disease,
diabetes, etc, or past rectal surgery. To
these people as well, I offer hope and options,
as our approach involves only low-risk, low-trauma
procedures that are easy to tolerate. Read
more about contraindications and
having Keesey
treatments after surgery.
Second, the possibility of cure is also offered to seniors regardless
of their age. Some have been successfully treated here in their 80’s
and 90’s.
For other rectal diseases there are other
types of treatments required besides the Keesey Treatment described
for hemorrhoids, but they are all "ambulatory,” meaning
the patient is able to walk in, be treated, and walk out.
There are also medical
conditions with which use of the Keesey Treatment is not recommended.
These are called contraindications.
